Everyday Cast Iron Care Directions

(After Cooking)

1. Clean your cast iron

Allow cookware to cool slightly. Clean using warm water & a brush, scraper, or coarse kosher salt if needed. Dry thoroughly.

2. Gently warm the pan

Place clean cast iron on the stovetop over low heat for about 5 minutes. The pan should be warm to the touch, not hot (Use silicon potholders if pan is too hot).

3. Apply Cowboy Bob's Cast Iron Care

Using a lint-free cotton cloth, apply a very thin layer to the entire surface: interior, exterior, & handle.

4. Buff off excess

Buff thoroughly with a clean cloth until the surface feels dry, not greasy. A little goes a long way.

5. Reapply after each use

Regular application helps maintain seasoning & protects against rust.

Initial or Deep Seasoning Directions

(For new cast iron or building a stronger layer)

  1. Follow the everyday care steps above.

  2. Place cookware upside down in a 450°F oven.

  3. Place a baking sheet on the rack below to catch drips, although there should be no drips if you put thin layer on cast iron.

  4. Bake for 1 hour.

  5. Turn off the oven, allow cookware to cool completely inside the oven.

  6. Repeat 3–5 times, allowing full cooling between cycles

More cycles create a stronger seasoning layer.

Cleaning Tip: Using Coarse Salt

For stubborn, stuck-on food:

  • Sprinkle coarse salt into a warm (not hot) pan
  • Gently scrub with a lint-free cloth or brush (because salt is abrasive, do this lightly to avoid removing the seasoning).
  • Wipe clean, dry thoroughly, warm pan, then reapply Cowboy Bob's Cast Iron Care.

(No oil is needed during the salt scrub.)

Care Tips & Best Practices

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying too much product

Ingredient Facts & Questions

What We Use, What We Don’t, and Why It Matters

Why did we choose organic Avocado Oil?

We chose organic avocado oil because it is naturally high in monounsaturated fats and remains stable under repeated heating. It supports thin application and clean polymerization, which are essential for building strong cast iron seasoning over time.

What does “Glyphosate-Residue Free” and “Regenerative Farming” mean for the Avocado Oil we use?

Our avocado oil is selected to be Glyphosate-Residue Free, meaning it has been third-party tested by the manufacturer to ensure no traces of the common herbicide glyphosate are present. This ensures the oil meets the highest purity standards for your cookware and your kitchen.

Furthermore, we prioritize oil sourced from Regenerative Farming practices. This goes beyond "sustainable" it means the orchards are managed in a way that actually restores the soil, increases biodiversity, and captures carbon. By choosing glyphosate -residue free & regenerative farming and oil, we are supporting a farming cycle that protects the and while providing you with a clean, non-toxic product for your cookware.

Why is Avocado Oil better for cast iron care than many seed oils?

Avocado oil is more heat-stable and less prone to rapid oxidation than many industrial seed oils. This makes it better suited for repeated heating cycles, helping seasoning strengthen naturally instead of breaking down.

What industrial seed oils are excluded from our formula?

Cowboy Bob’s Cast Iron Care contains no canola (rapeseed), grapeseed, sunflower, safflower, or soy oils

How do Avocado Oil and Beeswax work together?

Avocado oil supports clean polymerization and long-term seasoning, while beeswax supports even application and moisture protection. Together, they create a balanced formula designed for thin layers, proper buffing, and consistent care.

Why include Beeswax in cast iron care at all?

Beeswax plays a supporting role in cast iron care. It helps provide a natural moisture barrier, improves consistency during application, and reduces the risk of over-application. It does not season cast iron by itself but supports proper seasoning practices.

What makes our Beeswax different from other Beeswax?

Our beeswax is 100% USA-sourced from a family-run apiary and is not imported or blended. It comes from beeswax cappings, the cleanest wax produced in the hive, and is carefully filtered without chemical processing.

Why does the source of Beeswax matter?

Beeswax quality varies widely. Imported or blended waxes can be inconsistent and difficult to trace. Sourcing from a U.S. family farm provides transparency, consistency, and confidence in how the wax is harvested and handled.

Why isn’t our Beeswax labeled “organic”?

Under U.S. standards, domestically produced beeswax cannot be certified organic. Beeswax labeled “organic” is typically imported rather than U.S.-sourced. We prioritize traceability and purity over certification labels.

Why are there "marble" or "cloud-like" patterns on the surface of my wax?

Those unique visual patterns are a natural phenomenon known as "The Bloom." This only occurs when you use ultra-premium, unrefined ingredients like our USA-Sourced Capping BeesWax and Organic Avocado Oil.

Most mass-market conditioners use highly processed oils and chemical stabilizers to force a perfectly flat, uniform surface. This gives the wax a stiff, plastic-like appearance that lacks the natural nutrients your cast iron needs. Because Cowboy Bob’s refuses to use these "plastic-looking" stabilizers, our premium fats settle naturally. While the surface is smooth as silk, that visual marbling is your Certificate of Authenticity—proof that our formula hasn't been "tamed" by industrial chemicals.

What makes our formula different from most cast iron products?

Many products focus on fast cosmetic results. Cowboy Bob’s Cast Iron Care is designed for long-term performance, using stable ingredients and traditional methods that strengthen seasoning gradually over time.

What’s the biggest mistake people make with cast iron care?

Using too much product. Proper cast iron care relies on very thin application and thorough buffing. Excess oil, regardless of type, can lead to stickiness and uneven seasoning.

What is Cowboy Bob’s Cast Iron Care stored in?

We don’t just think about ingredients, we think about everything. Other companies use aluminum tins, which are lighter and less expensive, many of these tins have an interior coatings. We use heavy-duty tin-plated steel, not thin aluminum. Unlike many aluminum containers, our tins are free from BPA and epoxy liners, keeping your heritage care products pure and chemical-free.We chose steel because it’s stronger, more durable, and better aligned with the heritage of cast iron. Thoughtful sourcing doesn’t stop at the formula.

Is this a cleaner?

No, Cowboy Bob’s Cast Iron Care is not a cleaner.
It is a conditioning and seasoning product designed to protect cast iron, maintain seasoning, and help prevent rust after cleaning.
You clean your cast iron first (with hot water, gentle scrubbing, and no harsh detergents), dry it completely (make sure it is dried completely by warming it on stovetop), then apply Cowboy Bob’s as the final protective step.

Can I apply too much?

Yes, it’s possible to use too much. Cast iron responds best tovery thin layers. If too much is applied, the surface may feel sticky instead of smooth. Always buff off any excess before heating. Remember: less is better.

How often should I use Cowboy Bob’s Cast Iron Care?

Always use after cleaning and whenever your cast iron looks dry or dull. A very thin layer is all you need. Regular use helps maintain seasoning and protect against rust.

For deeper maintenance, a full oven re-seasoning is only needed occasionally, such as after heavy buildup, rust removal, or if the seasoning has been damaged. With regular care, most pans only need a deep re-season a few times a year or less.

What is the Heritage Organic Buffing Cloth Made of?

Our Buffing Cloth is made from 100% Organic Cotton, Certified to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, meaning it has been tested for harmful chemicals. The cloth is made in the USA.

Are your products made in the USA?

Yes. Cowboy Bob’s is a family-owned American business, and our products are made and owned in the USA.

That’s why we use:

  • USA-sourced beeswax from a family-run apiary
